Vaginal odor is a fairly common occurrence, even if you take good care of personal hygiene. Often your vagina may smell strange, and that surely is embarrassing, and may affect your sex life, or just make you quite socially awkward.
A healthy vagina too has a fleshy or a musky smell, and that is perfectly normal, and so is a slight metallic smell that at times occurs during menstrual cycles. However, if your vagina smells fishy or has a sharp stinging smell then you may need to consult a doctor, as it may be a sign of STDs or infections.
If you have a strong odor coming off your vagina, along with a stinging or itching sensation and an unusual discharge, these are all signs that you need to visit a doctor as soon as possible, and get proper medical help.
Often women may experience foul smelling vaginas with no rash or irritation, and there are a couple of simple and easy remedies that can be tried in the privacy and comfort of home, and usually these bring successful results:
Yogurt
One of the most common causes of vaginal odors is candida infection, and yogurt includes lactobacillus that helps restore the natural pH level of the vagina and fight the candida infection. Yogurt can be eaten, a plain unsweetened variety, to help the body fight infections, or if you ae comfortable with it, a tampon can be dipped in plain yogurt and inserted into the vagina. Leave this on for at least an hour, and be careful to wash off carefully and pat the area dry.
Neem Leaves
Neem, or the Indian lilac, comes from the mahogany family, and is commonly found in the Indian subcontinent and the Maldives. This little gem has antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, and it works like a charm on vaginal odor. Simply boil a handful of neem leaves in a pan of water. Once well boiled, add this to your bath water, or wash off the vagina with this solution. You will see instant effective results.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil’s antiseptic properties work wonders to fight off fungal and bacterial infections. Tea Tree Oil can be added to a cup of lukewarm water, and this can be used to wash the vagina thoroughly. It helps in eliminating the foul stench, and also refreshes the vaginal area, along with fighting off skin allergies and rashes.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Though vinegar has quite a strong smell of its own, it works wonders in helping to restore the skin’s pH levels and fight off any infections. Apple Cider Vinegar can be worked to enhance and improve many skin conditions, and is great for the hair too, and a cupful of ACV mixed into bath water can get rid of the foul stench down there. Opt for organic ACV, and you will get fast and better results.
Fenugreek Seeds
Beauty blogger Farah Dukhai has already talked about the benefit of fenugreek seeds for the skin and hair, but it is quite an unknown fact that fenugreek seeks are effective for weight loss, improving hormonal imbalances and regulating periods. Taking fenugreek tea can also improve bodily odors, as the hormones are balanced out, which eventually leads to getting rid of bodily odors. Soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds overnight. Boil this in a glass of water the next morning. Consume on an empty stomach. Beware though, fenugreek seeds also tend to cause allergic reactions and may give an upset stomach.
Baking Soda
Known to remove bad odors from shoes, carpets, refrigerators and even bodily odors, baking soda is one multi-purpose kitchen product. To get rid of vaginal odor, fill a bath tub with water and add in half a cup of baking soda. Soak in this baking soda bath for at least half an hour. Baking soda also helps restore the skin’s natural pH level, fights yeast infections, and works even on the most sensitive of skins.
Along with all these remedies, it is essential to maintain and practice good personal hygiene. Taking a shower regularly along with wearing clean underwear leads to a clean and healthy vagina. Remember to always pat dry the vaginal area, as a wet area is a ground for bacteria breeding. Consuming a healthy diet and practising safe sex also helps fight vaginal infections which lead to foul odors. Consulting a doctor is essential, and one must not always rely on home remedies only if the problem gets out of control.
